Did you know that in 71 countries, being gay is criminalized. Unforunately, not everyone has the privilege of being able to openly show love and affection to their partner without the risk of being arrested and/or killed.
The issue presented is one of gay rights, or in this case, countries with a lack of. In 71 countries, two consenting adults being in a same-sex relationship is criminalized and can be punished by fines, jail time, or the death penalty depending on the country.
A poster is needed to bring awareness to the homophobic and discriminatory laws that exist in the world. The goal is to educate the target audience, Canadians, about gay right issues and injustices going on in other countries.
While researching, I knew I wanted to present the reality of the situation and I didn't want to sugar coat it. 71 is a big number and I wanted to present it in a visual way to make the viewer think. I wanted the poster to server as a callout to those specific countries.
As I needed the poster to have a list of all the countries, I explored many different layouts with lists and different ways of representing 71 in rainbow.
I ended up making a rainbow with the names of the countries visually represent the list.
As this poster is about gay rights, I used the colours of the rainbow to represent the pride flag. Black was chosen as a background colour to allow for the rainbow colours to pop.
The final product resulted in a poster that visually represents the 71 countries that laws against being gay by listing the in different coloured arches to represent a rainbow. This is to visually represent that the poster is about gay rights.
